
Choosing between plasma and laser cutting for heavy plate
Where each process earns its place once plate thickness, edge quality and volume come into it.
Both processes cut heavy plate, but they are not interchangeable. The right answer usually comes down to three things: the thickness you are cutting, the edge quality the next operation needs, and how many parts are in the run.
Thickness moves the economics
On thinner material a laser is generally faster and leaves an edge that often needs no dressing at all. As plate gets heavier the economics shift, and plasma starts to win on cost per metre even though the edge needs more attention afterwards.
What happens to the part next
A part heading straight to weld prep may not need a laser edge at all, in which case paying for one is money spent on a finish that gets ground off. A part going to a machined or bolted assembly is a different conversation.
Where the crossover sits
There is no single number, because it depends on the grade and on what the part does next. As a rough guide:
- Thin plate with tight tolerances tends to favour the laser
- Heavy structural plate often favours plasma on cost
- Parts going straight to weld prep may not need a laser edge
- Long repeat runs change the calculation again
